The former Savin Court Apartments will soon house dozens of University of New Haven students under a new lease agreement with a New Haven developer who recently purchased the property at 783 Savin Ave.

Site selectors return to city, region

For the second time in as many summers, professional sight selectors were given a two-day look at the Southern Connecticut region in hopes of locating future developers. Completed last Thursday, the sight selectors were given a tour of the area and shown the benefits this part of the state has to offer.

Schools opening today

The summer ended today. At least that’s the case for more than 6,300 students who began the new school year. Though it’s planned as a shortened day, the realization summer vacation is over was realized last night.

School night hours became the norm for many of those students, who have to get a good nigh’ts sleep in order to function well in class. If that wasn’t enough to make summer’s end hit home, a full-day session is planned for tomorrow.

Picard: Austerity plan works

While the City Council and the public get their first look at the just-completed audit for fiscal year 2007, Mayor John Picard is hoping the findings will show a plan that goes beyond the numbers. The audit, which had been held up for more than 7 months, was presented to the council through representatives of McGladry & Pullen as well as Finance Director Robert Barron.

City chips at deficit

In a city beset with financial woes, some good news came out of the very late and very anticipated yearly audit. The draft audit presented to state officials July 31 shows the city came in under budget and was able to collect almost $2 million more than anticipated.

Businessman, dad taught life lessons

Richard C. “Dick” Chamberlin, Sr. who owned and operated Chamberlin Realty and Insurance at the corner of Campbell Ave. and New Street passed away July 3. 2008, at the age of 88. He was the second-generation owner of the oldest real estate and insurance company in West Haven, founded by his father Charles G. Chamberlin in 1907. In 1967 Chamberlin and his brother Robert acquired several adjoining parcels and built the modern strip plaza where the company continues to do business today across from Bank America.
