Residents asked to sign up for emergency system

In the wake of Tropical Storm Hanna that swept through the area Sept. 6, Emergency Management Director Robert Schwartz praised the efficiency of the city’s Blackboard Connect-CTY Emergency Notification System that promptly phoned residents with a tropical storm watch advisory and emergency tips before the storm hit.

Yale gift aids WSFD purchase

The West Shore Fire Department has received a $150,000 gift from Yale University to help buy a new fire truck.

Mayor John M. Picard on Sept. 18 announced the gift at a City Hall news conference attended by Yale Associate Vice President Michael J. Morand, acting West Shore Fire Chief David A. Collins and other city and fire officials.

Councilor asks review of facts in benefits flap

The Third District Democratic Councilwoman hopes an agenda item discussed next week will result in overturning what she believes was an improper directive. Gail Carroll (D-3) has requested the council review the actions of Councilman Stuart Arotsky () in postponing the cancellation of medical benefits to Republican Registrar of Voters JoAnn Callegari.

Kutcha family answered the 'Knock'

The Kuchta family of 24 Gertrude St. – from left, dad Tom, daughter Jessica, 13, mom Laura and daughter Megan, 15 – are all smiles on the mobile set of the new ABC game show “Opportunity Knocks” after winning a flat-screen TV. A truck from the “Opportunity Knocks” Block Party Mobile Tour rolled into the city Monday and set up shop on the Kuchta’s front lawn, where neighbors watched them compete in the family quiz show, which tests how much family members know about each other.

Arts Center plans moving

Lights, camera, arts center.

Preliminary plans are under way to turn the city-owned Masonic Temple on Center Street into a grand, multimillion-dollar for the performing arts that will eventually house the West Haven Cultural Arts Center.
