Recycling keeps operational costs down

As the population of towns get bigger so does its operational cost. Education, safety, and trash removal grows in proportion to the town’s growth. As a town, we can’t cut cost on education and safety. These are integral parts of a community as big as ours. Trash removal is one area in which we can all save the town money, and as a result, keep more money in our own pockets in the long run. How? It’s done by keeping West Haven’s operational costs down. You may think that’s not your problem. But it is! We are all in this together. It’s our community and our future.

Annual Halloween Parade tonight

It started in 1998, and has become a tradition for the downtown area. This afternoon the West Haven Business Association and the city will hold their annual Halloween Costume Parade from 5 to 7 p.m. on the Green at Campbell Avenue and Main Street.

Head Start celebrates 30th anniversary

With stirring remarks by dignitaries, heartfelt thanks from staff, volunteers and parents, and a musical parade of preschool children, the West Haven Community House Head Start program celebrated its 30th anniversary with all the fanfare and emotion for which the milestone called!

Funders have first hand look at after school programs

Children under the care of the West Haven Community House welcomed several of the agency’s funders to observe the activities they enjoy after school in a safe environment, while their parents and guardians are working. The visit took place at Savin Rock Community School in celebration of Lights on After School, Oct. 16. Lights on AfterSchool is designed to demonstrate the many ways after-school programs support America's families and communities.

Economic summit held at conference center

Mayor John M. Picard sat with several members of the real estate and development communities at the city’s economic development summit at the Savin Rock Conference Center Oct. 16.

City officials held the summit, which drew developers and real estate brokers from around southern Connecticut, to market the region for economic development.

Downturn curtails aid

The recent economic tumult has had its effect on many in the city. Retirement accounts, mortgages and other financial portfolios have all been affected by the downturn.

For many, the downturn has been more than just paper. Jobs have been lost, wages cut, and the ability to function month-to-month has been made more difficult.
