The city will light its holiday tree Saturday on the Green. The event will begin at 5 p.m. with holiday carols led by Council on the Arts President Paul Scanlon, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the tree, which is encircled by 11 smaller evergreen trees sponsored by local organizations, an hour later. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and their elves, escorted by a trombone and trumpet player, will ride in a tractor-drawn trailer to the Green, where special guests – Bill and Penny Carew with their 10 biological and adopted children, two of whom have cystic fibrosis – will pull the switch that lights the tree.During the lighting, Mayor John M. Picard will read a children’s story, and Scanlon will lead a singalong of holiday classics. Picard also will announce the two winners of his third holiday card contest. Santa will meet visitors and pose for snapshots in his workshop until 8:45 p.m., when he will return to the North Pole. Giant electric snowflakes will decorate the gazebo, and Victorian-era streetlamps decked out with electric angels blowing on trumpets will illuminate the walkways. Along with hayrides, children can ride on a merry-go-round and fish in a “pond” for prizes. The West Haven Business Association will offer face painting and hand out hot chocolate. The event is free, but people may bring nonperishable food for the West Haven Emergency Assistance Task Force. The rain date is 5 p.m. Monday. In Allingtown, the annual tree-lighting ceremony for the Green is set for Sunday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. The program includes Christmas carols, hot chocolate and cookies, and a special visit by Santa Claus. The event is sponsored by Allingtown District businesses. State Rep. Louis Esposito and Mayor John Picard will be on hand as well as the Allingtown Fire Commissioners. |
