Notre Dame of West Haven foreign language teacher Dominic Corraro was one of 10 teachers awarded the prestigious Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts “Local Heroes Award.” To further recognize Mr. Corraro for his hard work, RMHC awarded a $500 grant to Notre Dame High School in his honor. Corraro was honored for his tremendous dedication to their profession and outstanding efforts in servicing their schools and communities.
“Our board of directors is proud to acknowledge these exceptional teachers for their tireless commitment and important service,” said Elizabeth Bergstrom, President of RMHC of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. “Our RMHC chapter awards grants to local nonprofits that provide a brighter future for children, with a particular focus on supporting education. With the Local Heroes Award, we are able to thank the devoted professionals who help children everyday – our outstanding area teachers.” Corraro has been teaching at Notre Dame of West Haven for the last 25 years and has served as the Foreign Language Department Chairperson for the past 15 years. He has taught all levels of French, Italian, Spanish and beginning Latin. In his classroom, Mr. Corraro employs games and visual aids to engage his students. He volunteers his time by serving as moderator of various student activities such as foreign language clubs, honor societies and yearbook. He has expanded the reach of his instruction by taking numerous groups to France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, England, Austria and Germany over the past 22 years. Corraro is an adjunct professor at both Quinnipiac University and Albertus Magnus, as well as a University of Connecticut Early College Experience instructor. “We are honored that the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts selected Dominic Corraro for this prestigious award,” said Bro. James Branigan, CSC President of Notre Dame High School. “We have known for a long time how important Dominic and his work here in our Foreign Language Department have been to the thousands of students he has influenced over the years. To see that fact recognized from an outside agency only validates that thought.” RMHC was proud to surprise Mr. Corraro by visiting his Senior Italian class on a recent school day to present him with a commemorative plaque and the $500 grant check for the school. |
