We must be doing something right. Business Week Magazine and BusinessWeek.com has rated West Haven as one of the country’s top communities to raise children. In a story published in its recent edition, West Haven beat out other, more affluent, communities due to its affordability and some of its amenities.
This was the second annual survey published by the magazine, which used New York-based OnBoard Informatics for its real estate analysis. Communities were selected that had at least 50,000 residents and a median family income of between $40,000 and $100,000. The story, written by Prashant Gopal, notes that affordability was the key component in the survey’s selection process. Other criteria included school performance, crime rate, air quality, job growth, museums, parks, theaters and diversity. The most important criteria were school performance and safety. Gopal and Business Week noted that based on many of its own criteria, Greenwich is a great location to raise a family. It’s problem is affordability. With our proximity to several universities, including Yale, and our shoreline, it seems BusinessWeek.com editors saw the city as a family location. Connecticut runner-ups included Norwalk and East Hartford. According to the statistics in the article, West Haven has 54,765 residents with a median income of $63,191. Included in the list this year are Honolulu, Fort Collins, CO, and Fort Wayne, ID. Mayor John Picard said the designation is a great thing for the city. “This helps tell us the city is moving in the right direction. We’re really excited about this,” he said. According to Picard, he knew the designation was to be made, but didn’t know when it was going to be published. “We got the email about it, but some people have also sent the link,” he said.
