When Principal Paul DeFonzo, St. Lawrence School, heard last week that the shelves at WHEAT, the West Haven Emergency Assistance Task Force, 674 Washington Ave., 931-9877, were nearly empty, he sprang into action. On Monday, Oct. 27 he informed his students and their parents that they would conduct a food drive for the next 4 days, Tuesday through Friday. ity’s Emergency Response System staff. What happened after that is just short of phenomenal. In just four short days, with the Food Drive culminating on Halloween, his students brought in a whopping 1700 pounds of food, each day surpassing the total from the previous day! Pastor, the Rev. Mark Jette, W.H.E.A.T. director Rose Majestic, the workers at WHE.AT, and Principal DeFonzo and his staff were overwhelmed by the generosity of the students and their families. In return, DeFonzo treated his entire student body and staff to a dress down day and pancake breakfast on Friday, Nov. 7. Officials from WHEAT attended to thank the students.
