Is there somehow a link between the battle of Gettysburg and our most American of holidays? Indeed there is! “How so?” you might ask. Well, it’s like this…

In the midst of all the terrible strife of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln took the time to set aside a Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving. Lincoln had not been a Christian when he became President; nor had he been a Christian when his young son Tad died; but when he went to Gettysburg in July of 1863, and saw the fresh graves of all those thousands of soldiers, he then committed his life to Christ. The knowledge of his conversion makes the following proclamation, made by Lincoln only three months later, all the more touching:

In 1888, the first fire department was organized in what was then the borough of West Haven, town of Orange; it used equipment, which was stored on Washington Avenue, as there was as yet no firehouse.  This equipment consisted of a primitive horse-drawn pumper, which was simply a water tank on wheels with a pump that was operated by 30 men.  This pumper had high red wooden-spoked wheels and a long horizontal reciprocating pump handle on either side of the tank, and when operated, it could throw a stream of water up over the flagpole on the Green.

As you read the old gravestones outside of First Church, chances are that the first thought to cross your mind is, “They died so young.” And so they did; indeed, if you lived to an old age back then, you had a very strong constitution—and you were also very lucky.

We look out across the water and there they are; we take them for granted and give them little if any thought. But why are they there? How old are they, and are they really necessary anyway? For most of us the “breakwalls,” or breakwaters as they are more commonly known, are just a pile of rocks that hold back the waves of Long Island Sound. Aside from mariners and pleasure boaters, no one pays any special attention to them. And yet, they are a truly important component in the past and present of New Haven Harbor.
