Three weeks ago, the West Haven sports scene lost yet another of the people who made a difference. William “Bill” Mahon passed away at the age of 92.

For literally thousands of city youngsters, Mahon was an icon in their youth. For decades he coached in the West Haven Biddy Basketball League. And, if memory serves he did a stint in the old West Shore Athletic League as well, coaching older players. But for years Mahon stomped along the sidelines at Seth Haley School’s gym, barking out instructions and attempting to hone the finer points of the zone defense to his players.
