Volunteers make holiday bright

What started out as a community effort 22 years ago has continued to expand and deliver the true meaning of Thanksgiving to all involved. That was the assessment of Community Thanksgiving Chairman, the Rev. Art Yost this week, following another successful dinner at First Congregational Church’s Fellowship Hall.

Tree-lighting ceremony Saturday

The city will light its holiday tree Saturday on the Green.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. with holiday carols led by Council on the Arts President Paul Scanlon, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the tree, which is encircled by 11 smaller evergreen trees sponsored by local organizations, an hour later.

Language teacher cited as 'Hero'

Notre Dame of West Haven foreign language teacher Dominic Corraro was one of 10 teachers awarded the prestigious Ronald McDonald House Charities of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts “Local Heroes Award.” To further recognize Mr. Corraro for his hard work, RMHC awarded a $500 grant to Notre Dame High School in his honor. Corraro was honored for his tremendous dedication to their profession and outstanding efforts in servicing their schools and communities.

Success miffs OPM, says Picard

The recent dressing down city Finance Director Robert Barron took at the hands of some officials of the state’s Office of Policy and Management is seen as nothing more than sour grapes and an ambush by Mayor John Picard. Barron was told the city was on the brink of financial disaster and that collections and other financial problems concern the agency. Those findings were then made public in a story in local papers last week.

Star Distributors, Inc expands headquarters

City officials were on hand as a longtime city business opened its expanded headquarters. Star Distributors, Inc. hosted the grand opening of its new $14 million office coplex at 460 Frontage Road, ending a two-year construction project. Several city officials, including Mayor John Picard, were on hand for the festivities.
