School officials and police were still investigating a bomb scare at West Haven High School this week. The McDonough Plaza complex was locked down and students forced to Ken Strong Stadium just after classes began Monday morning. The entire student body was kept in 40-degree weather for more than four hours before school officials decided to cancel the day. Parents were upset because the lockdown prohibited them from taking coats and other clothing to their children while in the stadium.
A phone call came into the building before school Monday, saying several bombs had been planted inside the building and were to go off just after the start of the day. School officials sounded the fire alarm clearing the building and sending the 1600 students and faculty to the Frank Fitzgerald Sports Complex. School officials said this week the sweep of the building was expected to take about three-quarters of an hour, but hold ups in getting bomb-sniffing dogs from New Haven extended the period students were left outside. When it became apparent it would be difficult to get the investigation done in a timely manner, Supt. of Schools Neil Cavallaro decided to cancel classes. During the four-hour wait in the stadium at least one fight was reported among students, but most attempted to stay calm and huddle up in the raw October weather. Tuesday things were back to normal, but officials and police were still probing the call in an attempt to identify the caller. No further information was available at press time. |
