By Michael P. Walsh Special to the Voice Federal officials toured the West River area of New Haven Harbor on Friday to discuss the decaying seawall there and the feasibility of rebuilding the wooden bulkhead, which city officials say would jump-start an ambitious development project that has been on the drawing board for more than a decade. During a presentation on the West River Crossing bulkhead project, Mayor John M. Picard said repairing the 1,400-foot seawall off Water Street is crucial to stopping erosion, controlling pollution, spurring economic development and creating jobs. U.S. Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro, D-3, and Economic Development Administration Regional Director Willie C. Taylor echoed Picard’s assessment, saying replacing the seawall, which was built in the late 1920s, is vital to the area’s economic development efforts. |

By Bill Riccio, Jr. Voice Editor An arbitration award that was rejected by the City Council in April will have to wait another month before a ruling. The newly empanelled arbitrators have requested 30 days to review testimony from the first set of hearings before rendering a ruling. “We got a letter last week asking for a 30-day extension,” said Mayor John Picard last week. “That means it will be at least another month before any decision is made. But it was the benefits portion of the ruling that created much of the political upheaval. |

By Bill Riccio, Jr. Voice Editor Using the notion no one knows what you have until you tell them, the West Haven Economic Development Task Force is sponsoring its first “Discover West Haven Day” next Wednesday in the David Beckerman Recreation Center at the University of New Haven. The daylong event, which begins at 8:30, is an effort to present to the city’s business community and those who might be looking at the area, a glimpse of programs, services and incentives that could make doing business here more productive. Geared toward small to medium-sized business, the days is an effort to inform owners and developers what the city has to offer, according to Ashley McLellan, special projects coordination, who is directing the event along with the task force. |

By Michael P. Walsh Special to the Voice The city has had its bond rating upgraded this month by New York-based Moody’s Investors Service and Standard & Poor’s, two of Wall Street’s major bond rating firms. The Moody’s upgrade was due to a recalibration of its municipal rating to a global rating scale. As a result, the Moody’s rating has been revised to A2 from Baa2. The Standard & Poor’s upgrade was due to “recent improvements in the city’s financial position” and “its recent progress in reducing the accumulated deficit.” As a result, the Standard & Poor’s rating has been revised to BBB from BBB-. |
